Can sex be the key to spiritual enlightenment? Cosmic sex and its ability to harness the universe’s energy
By Charlotte Colley

Sunlight kissing your skin. The sound of wind brushing past your ears. Ocean air fills your lungs.

These are all natural things that can be harnessed to amplify sexuality and ground the body, particularly through a process called ‘cosmic sex’.

Cosmic sex is the concept of using sexual energy to unify people back to the universe, where once a purely physical act becomes a spiritual experience.

Through this, it is believed that harnessing the universe’s energy can then enrich and heighten romantic connection and personal development.

Zul Arif, 27, founder of Cosmic Sensation, explains that ‘cosmic’ means sexuality that is felt with awareness, not rushed, performed or disconnected from the self.

They started their journey with cosmic sex when they moved to Melbourne, Australia from the Maldives and noticed a strong gap between healthy sexuality and unhealed sexuality, leading them to launch ‘cosmic sensation’ to help people reconnect to their sexuality.

“Cosmic sex is really about reconnecting sexuality with presence, nature, and consciousness. It is not about making sex sound otherworldly for the sake of it. It is about remembering that the body is already part of something living, rhythmic, and intelligent.

“Its purpose is to help people come back into their bodies with more safety, curiosity, and care. For many of us, desire has been shaped by shame, pressure, politics, culture, religion, media, or trauma. Cosmic sex offers a softer way back. It says: slow down, breathe, listen, feel, and reconnect.”

For some, the combination of nature, known as eco-eroticism, furthers the grounding aspect and allows for full reconnection during intimacy to feel what Zul describes as ‘alive’.

The feeling of grass beneath your feet, the smell of rain or even the privacy of a quiet landscape are some of the ways nature can enhance intimacy and internal harmony.

“Nature mirrors many of the qualities that make sexual experiences meaningful – rhythm, patience, softness, intensity, surrender, safety, and timing. Nature amplifies desire because it helps the body feel grounded. Modern life can make sexuality feel disconnected – too much screen time, stress, politics and so on. Nature brings us back into sensation. The body starts to soften. The breath deepens. The nervous system gets a chance to settle,” Zul says.

“Eroticism does not always begin with explicit sexuality. Sometimes it begins with feeling alive again. That kind of sensory return can awaken desire in a more natural way.”

Zul also emphasises the importance of always approaching this with respect, legality, privacy and of course, consent.

Additionally, cosmic sex draws inspiration from practices such as Tantra, a spiritual tradition rooted in India, containing practices that seek to expand consciousness and reach a state of spiritual enlightenment.

Zul adds that Tantra is incorporated through methods such as breathwork, nervous system work, sexual healing and so on.

“The way we approach cosmic sex is more of a modern synthesis than one single practice. It draws from conscious sexuality. But it is important to approach those influences with respect. We are not claiming to own ancient traditions or turn sacred practices into an aesthetic. The intention is not to say, “This is the one true path.” It is to offer language for people who may feel disconnected from their bodies and are looking for a more grounded, sensual, and conscious way back to themselves,” they say.

Consciousness plays a large role in engaging with cosmic sex, cosmic consciousness as a whole is an amplified state of awareness where a person feels connected to the universe and its energy.

Conscious, focused, sexual acts are thought to be the most important for enhancing connections to each other and the universe.

Zul explains that the key to starting to engage with conscious cosmic sex is becoming aware and taking notice of our body and over-awareness during intimacy, starting even before another person is involved.

“Connection and consciousness are the foundation. Without consciousness, sexuality can easily become automatic, something we do from habit, pressure, validation, fantasy, or emotional avoidance. Without connection, it may still be physically pleasurable, but it can leave people feeling empty or unseen,” they explain.

“Cosmic sex begins with connection to the self. Can I feel my body? Can I tell the difference between desire and pressure? That awareness matters before we bring another person into the experience. So cosmic sex is not one category. It is an embodied philosophy. It brings the body, the nervous system, the emotions, and consciousness back into conversation.”

Some also believe sexual energy can be harnessed through methods such as visualisation and self meditation too to enhance one’s spirituality.

Meditation can look like specific mind, body and heart guided meditation to anxiety targeted meditation to ground a person back into their self and body.

At its core, Cosmic sex speaks to the business of modern-day intimacy, often quick-paced, unconnected and spiritually unfulfilling, where perhaps taking the time to ground ourselves is the way to amplify and reconnect is the answer.

“Cosmic sex amplifies sexuality by taking away the pressure to chase intensity and replacing it with presence. When we breathe, ground ourselves, and become more aware of sensation, even subtle touch, eye contact, warmth, or sound can become deeply erotic. This is where sexuality becomes less mechanical and more alive,” Zul says.

“Cosmic sex invites people to ask: Am I actually feeling this? Is my body open, or am I performing? That honesty can turn pleasure from something we do into something we inhabit.”
