A yearning-filled one can make them analyse a three-second glance like it is evidence in a criminal investigation.

That difference matters more than people like admitting.

Online culture talks constantly about emotional health. TikTok is full of discussions about attachment styles, boundaries, emotional availability and “protecting your peace”. Dating advice increasingly encourages people to recognise red flags early, communicate clearly and avoid relationships that feel emotionally destabilising.

None of that is wrong. In real life, most people probably do want relationships built on trust, stability and emotional safety.

But the relationships that dominate culture rarely look like that.

Instead, people become fascinated by dynamics built around longing, emotional tension and unresolved desire. Heathcliff and Catherine in Wuthering Heights. Rue and Jules in Euphoria. The charged triangle at the centre of Challengers, where attraction feels tangled up with competition, resentment, and performance.

These stories continue to generate essays, edits and online discussion not because audiences mistake them for healthy, but because yearning creates a level of emotional intensity that stable relationships often do not.

That intensity is difficult to separate from storytelling itself.

A relationship that functions smoothly can still be meaningful, but it does not always create narrative momentum. Stories often depend on what remains unresolved: the almost-confession, the silence after a charged look, the feeling that two people want something they refuse to name.

Challengers works because it keeps that desire unstable. Attraction is mixed with rivalry, resentment and control, so every conversation carries more than it says. The audience is left doing the emotional labour: reading the pauses, guessing the motive, waiting for somebody to finally break.

That kind of uncertainty invites participation.

Social media amplifies this further. Platforms like TikTok reward relationships that leave emotional space for audiences to project onto. Entire trends revolve around unresolved romance: “situationships”, “limerence”, soft-launches, playlists for people who may never text back, edits built around longing rather than actual relationships.

Yearning translates extremely well online because it remains open-ended.

A happy relationship often becomes private very quickly. Longing, on the other hand, generates interpretation endlessly. One look, one line of dialogue or one unfinished interaction can produce thousands of comments debating what it “really meant”.

There is also a reason older stories like Wuthering Heights continue to survive culturally. Heathcliff and Catherine are not presented as emotionally healthy people. Their relationship damages nearly everyone around them. Yet the novel remains compelling because the emotions inside it feel disproportionate to ordinary life – obsessive, consuming and impossible to contain neatly.

That scale of feeling still resonates.

Modern dating culture often encourages emotional management: stay self-aware, stay detached, avoid becoming too emotionally dependent too quickly. Fiction tends to move in the opposite direction. It exaggerates emotion deliberately. It pushes desire to extremes because extremes are memorable.

That does not mean audiences necessarily want those relationships in reality.

There is an important difference between recognising intensity as emotionally compelling and believing it should be replicated in real life. Fiction creates distance. Watching Rue and Jules spiral emotionally is not the same thing as living through that instability yourself. Stories allow people to experience longing, obsession and emotional vulnerability without facing the real-life consequences attached to them.

And, culturally, yearning has advantages over stability.

Anastasiia Melnyk, 22, says she constantly sees emotionally unhealthy dynamics romanticised online, especially through edits and relationship discourse on TikTok.

“People will call something toxic and then romanticise it in the next sentence,” she says. “There’s this whole culture around emotionally unavailable people, situationships and relationships that feel intense rather than stable.”

She thinks part of the appeal comes from how unfinished these dynamics feel. “People become obsessed with the tension of ‘almost’. Once a relationship actually becomes normal and healthy, the fantasy kind of disappears.”

A stable relationship resolves tension. Yearning prolongs it. It keeps audiences emotionally involved because the outcome remains uncertain. People return to stories not only for comfort, but for emotional friction – the feeling of wanting something unresolved to finally happen.

A healthy relationship may ultimately make somebody happier. But culture has never been particularly interested in happiness. It’s interested in wanting, and the two are rarely the same thing.

[21,152
33,32,37,147
post-720","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-connections","category-connections-new-story","tag-love","tag-relationships","tag-social-media","tag-yearning-is-back

Why yearning beats healthy love online - Pomegranate

<meta name="description" content="A healthy relationship can make somebody feel secure.
